Should you ride in any environment where loose dirt, sand, or mud are present, these specially toughened motocross goggles are a non-negotiable piece of riding kit. Origins of the first goggles may be lost in time but as for the evolution of motorcycle goggles, we can thank the pioneering aviators of the early 1900s. Pilots wore protective eyewear to guard against bugs and wind blast. As motorcycles became faster than planes, the need for riders to wear goggles became obvious. Considering early goggles had glass lenses, modern technology and materials have allowed dirt bike goggles to become imminently safer to wear. The number of features available even in budget MX goggles means your eyes are now even safer. The more you invest, however, the more feature-packed they become.
Features to look for in motocross goggles
Multi-Layer Face Foam – Fit and comfort are everything for dirt bike goggles. A double or triple layer of foam that helps seal the goggles to the face will help keep out airborne debris.
Frameless Lens – A wide field of view allows you to see more of the terrain. Meanwhile, a frameless lens gives you a few more vital degrees of vision. The wider viewing angle is due to the lens not being obscured by thick frames.
Anti-Fog/Anti-Scratch Lens – A protective coating applied during the manufacturing process means no steaming up when the going gets sticky. While anti-scratch helps prevent the build-up of light diffracting scratches.
UV Protection - Ultraviolet light can damage eyesight. For bright conditions look for 100% UV protective lenses. Low percentage UV protection and clear lenses are best for low light or evening riding.
Tear-off Ready – Goggles that are tear-off ready mean that they have fasteners on either side of the frame that allows for the attachment of disposable lenses. The rider tears off the lens as it becomes obscured revealing a clean lens below.
Silicone Coated Straps – Fancy lenses are of no use if your MX goggles fly off at the first jump. Silicone coatings on the inside of the strap mean the goggles grip the helmet, to prevent slippage.
OTG – Over the Glasses means the goggles are designed with slightly more depth to allow for wearing glasses under the goggles.
Roll Off Ready – This feature allows for attaching a canister on either side of the goggles. One canister contains a roll of clear film, which covers the lens. As the film becomes dirty, it is wound into the opposite canister to provide un-obscured vision.
