Motorcycle Chain Master Link Guide
Doing things right is very important to keep unexpected problems from happening. Sometimes, the smallest things can cause the biggest problems. If your master link fails at high speed, it can cause the motorcycle chain to fly off your bike, or worse, jam up in the front sprocket, demolishing the crankcase.
But don’t worry about doing it right. XLMOTO carries name-brand motorcycle master links and high-quality chain tools so you can get the job done right the first time. A motorcycle master link is the one link that connects a motorcycle chain. There are a couple of different styles to choose from. One is the clip style master link, and the other one is a rivet style.
Clip Versus Rivet Style Motorcycle Master Link
The clip version master link is simply a master link with a clip that holds it in place. The rivet-style master link is a master link that is pressed onto the chain with a special rivet tool. The clip style master link is fine to use for smaller motorcycles and if you’re not going to race your motorcycle at high speeds. Most motocross bikes use the clip style, but for severe racing conditions, it’s best to use the rivet-style motorcycle master link for that extra peace of mind. The rivet-style master link is more secure than the clip version because it is held onto the chain via rivets instead of a clip. However, you need to use a special chain tool to break the chain and install the riveted master link.
Why Replace the Master Link?
The motorcycle chain master link should be replaced any time you get a new chain or if it gets damaged somehow. When you order a new chain, it may or may not come with the master link. You need to know if you need to order it separately.
How to Install a Clip Style Master Link
First, notice how the clip has a closed end and an open end. You want the closed end to point in the direction of travel from the top portion of the chain to prevent the clip from catching on to something.
Next, put the master link on from the back of the chain so that you can install the clip on the outside of the link closest to you. Then, simply slide the clip onto the master link pins. Just be careful not to bend or twist the clip.
How to Install a Rivet Style Master Link
This is more difficult than the clip version but better and more secure. XLMOTO sells quality chain tools to get the job done as smoothly and easily as possible. With the right chain tool, you can break a chain or install many different sizes of master links for that perfect fit. If you already have a riveted master link chain on your bike, the first step is to use the tool to break the chain. Refer to the owner’s manual for your particular chain tool. Usually, you’ll want to break the old master link. The next step would be to lube the master link with grease and then install it from the back of the chain. Next, consult the owner’s manual for the special chain tool to press the rivet link together. It’s extremely important to not press the rivets too far or else the rivets can crack or the master link will be clinched too far, thereby not allowing it to move. Using a caliper measuring tool, measure the existing width of other rivets on the chain and press the master link rivets until they are the same size. When you think you are done, double-check to make sure the master link can swivel and that the rivets look good.
Can I use a Clip Style Master Link on a Rivet Style Type Chain?
Depending upon the motorcycle’s size, power and use, technically, you could use a clip-style master link on a chain that originally used the rivet style, but it’s not advised. The other thing to note is that you should use a master link that came with the chain, or is compatible with the chain. You want to make sure that the master link is the same size, strength, and material as the rest of the chain.
