Rebuild Your Motorcycle Brake Caliper with XLMOTO’s Brake Repair Kit
In motocross or any type of motorcycle riding, there is nothing more important than being able to stop your bike quickly and safely. And there is nothing more dangerous than brakes failing while riding. That’s why if your brake caliper is worn, it’s crucial to rebuild your brake caliper with a brake caliper repair kit.
Before you attempt to fix your brakes, be aware that working brakes are essential for your safety. Failure of the brakes may result in death. Do not attempt to repair your brakes if you are doubtful of your mechanical skills. Your brake caliper is the core unit that houses the braking system near the disk brake. It has seals, pins, small pistons, and parts that, over time, can fail and cause brake fluid leakage or dysfunction in use.
Signs that your brake caliper is failing
When a rider applies pressure to the front brake lever or the rear brake pedal, the caliper, which houses the brake pads and has one or two pistons as well as several pins and clips, responds. Most motocross bikes have dual-piston front calipers and single-piston rear calipers because the front brakes have more stopping power due to the transfer of weight under heavy braking.
Many times riders think that their brake pads are going bad when it’s the brake caliper going bad. Here are things to look for when your brake caliper is going bad:
A high-pitched sound coming from the brakes – The problem may be in the brake pads if they are worn down, or the caliper.
Loss of braking power or irregular braking power – The more sudden the problem appears, the more likely it is that the problem is a brake caliper failure.
A warping or wobbling feeling when applying the brakes – If one of the pistons in the front brake sticks or fails, it could result in this wobbling feeling when applying the brakes. It may happen with single-cylinder brake calipers too.
Uneven pad wear – In general, a good brake system will result in even pad wear. A bad caliper will show uneven pad wear.
What causes brake caliper wear and failure?
Heat and dirt – Premature brake caliper failure is usually caused by heat and dirt that erodes the seals around the pistons. Make sure to clean your bike after every ride to keep dirt from getting into the brake caliper system.
Overuse of the brakes – It’s only logical that if you are hard on your brakes, then the calipers are going to wear out faster than normal.
Brake caliper hardware failure – If the hardware such as retention springs and pins that keep the brake pads positioned correctly goes bad, it can ruin the calipers.
Not regularly changing the brake fluid – Every time brake pads are replaced, the caliper pistons should be cleaned and greased. Brake fluid should also be changed at the prescribed intervals by the bike's manufacturer because old brake fluid will damage seals and eventually harm the calipers.
What is in a brake caliper repair kit?
The typical brake caliper repair kit will contain the following:
Gaskets
Copper washers
Seals
Attachment pins
Nipple cap
Mounting pin
And all the components to replace the OEM parts
You can also get a kit to repair the pistons. The typical piston kit includes:
1 or 2 brake pistons, equivalent to your original piston
2 or more seals
And all the springs and washers to replace all the OEM parts
XLMOTO sells motorcycle brake caliper repair kits that are equivalent to or even better than OEM. You can also find extra things you need to do the rebuild yourself such as the brake bleeding tube.
