If you've ever peered through a fogged up visor trying in vain to see the road ahead, you know how scary and dangerous vision impairment can be. As motorcyclists, we face enough risks out there without self-imposed blindness!

Luckily, there are effective anti-fogging solutions to keep your sightlines crystal clear in all conditions. In this article and video above, I'll be sharing my tips for installing and caring for Pinlock anti-fog inserts - the leading system trusted by riders worldwide.

Here’s everything you need to know to choose, install, and maintain Pinlock inserts for fog and worry-free adventure! Let’s get started.

Pinlock: The Anti-Fogging Leader for Motorcycle Helmets

As I mentioned in the video, Pinlock is the market leader when it comes to anti-fogging systems for motorcycle helmets. They've been around since 1978, so it's a tried and tested technology that riders have trusted for decades to keep their visors clear.

How Pinlock Prevents Fogging and Condensatio

So how does Pinlock work its magic? Pinlock inserts have a silicone bead seal that runs along the entire perimeter. When installed properly against your visor, this creates an airtight barrier that forms an insulated pocket of air. Essentially, it works just like the double glazing many of us have in our homes!

This insulated air pocket prevents the temperature differential that causes fog and condensation to form on your visor. So no more fruitlessly cracking your visor open or holding your breath at stop lights!

Checking if Your Helmet and Visor are Pinlock-Ready

Many major helmet manufacturers now offer Pinlock options either as standard equipment or as an aftermarket accessory. It's important when selecting your Pinlock insert that you get the one made specifically for your helmet model. Since visor shapes and curvatures vary, you need to ensure the insert seals cleanly all the way around your visor to maximize fog prevention.

The easiest way to check if your current visor is Pinlock-ready is to look for the two little screws or pins on either side. I demonstrate what to look for in the video. If your visor doesn't have these, you'll need to purchase a pinlock-ready replacement lens.

Installing Your Pinlock Insert

Once you've selected the right Pinlock insert for your specific helmet, it's time to get it into place.

Step 1: Clean Visor Interior First

Before installing, I recommend removing your visor and giving the interior a thorough clean using a helmet and visor cleaner like Motul. This removes any dust, oils or grime that could interfere with the seal or clarity of your Pinlock.

Step 2: Use Body Pressure to Bend Visor

The easiest technique I've found for getting the flexible Pinlock insert set into place is to use your body as an extra set of hands. I'm showing this in the video but i'll try to explain: With the visor off the helmet, stand the helmet upright leaning it against your midsection. This allows you to use the pressure of your body to bend and flex the visor slightly while leaving both hands free to position the insert.

Align the Pinlock roughly and then starting on one side, press it into place on the visor. I like to leave the protective film on while doing only the first side. Once one side is engaged, you can remove the rest of the protective film and flex the visor to press the other side into place.

You should hear a "pop" as the silicone seal makes contact all the way around the visor.

Step 3: Confirm Seal and Field of Vision

Before reattaching your visor, do a quick fog check by breathing on it. You should see minimal to no fogging within your main field of vision. Some fogging on the outer edges is normal. As long as clouds haven't formed in the crucial sightline area, you've achieved a proper seal!

Maintaining Your Pinlock System

While Pinlock is an extremely effective anti-fogging solution, the inserts do require occasional maintenance and care to keep them working properly.

Moisture Accumulation Reduces Effectiveness

The insulating air pocket created by the Pinlock can start to act like a little sponge over time, absorbing small amounts of moisture from your breath and the environment. As moisture accumulates, the fog prevention effectiveness will be reduced.

Clean & Dry to Refresh Performance

To revitalize a moisture-laden Pinlock, you'll need to remove it from your visor, give it a thorough cleaning, and allow it to dry completely before reinstalling.

Be very gentle when handling the insert to avoid scratching the surface. Use warm water and a mild detergent without abrasive chemicals. Then allow the insert to air dry rather than wiping it down to prevent transferring lint or debris.

Once fully dry, you can snap it back into place on your visor and enjoy crystal clear vision once again!

Periodic Maintenance Prevents Problems

Make it a habit to check your Pinlock seal and clarity periodically when cleaning your other helmet components. Schedule deep cleanings as needed to stay fog-free for every ride!

FAQs

Conclusion

I hope this overview has helped explain how Pinlock anti-fog inserts can be a total game changer for keeping your visor clear in all conditions.

Riding with an unfogged view of the road ahead is so vital for every motorcyclist's safety. While techniques like cracking your visor can help in a pinch, I highly recommend investing in Pinlock for reliable, long-term fog prevention.

And the good news is that with so many helmet models offering Pinlock options, it's easier than ever to equip your lid.

Take some time to research the exact right insert for your helmet and visor. Then enjoy the confidence of knowing your sightlines will stay crystal clear mile after mile!
